Chris Rock will star in the upcoming fourth series of Fargo, set in 1950, it has been announced.

He will play the head of a crime family in Kansas City, Missouri, who has surrendered his son to a rival Italian family while raising their son as his own to keep the peace between them.

Everything changes when the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into hospital for routine surgery and dies.

The series is described as a “story of immigration and assimilation and the things we do for money”.

Each series of the anthology crime show is set in a different time period. The first, which starred Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman, was set in 2006.

The second, with Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons, was set in 1979 and the most recent, starring Ewan McGregor as twins, was set in 2010.
