NEWS that former Morton and Rangers footballer Erik Sorensen is to open a Danish version of the Greenock pub he ran will rekindle memories for many.

His pub, the Cottage Bar in Arthur Street, was located in a area once well served by such establishments.

Today"s photograph shows the old Cartsburn bar/lounge which stood just a few steps away from the Cottage Bar. The picture was taken in 1970 when the Cartsburn had closed prior to demolition when the main road was widened.

Just along to the east off main road was the Oban Bar, across from the main gate of Scotts" shipyard.

Further east was to be found the Para Handy and, between Ratho Street and MacDougall Street, was the original James Watt Bar.

All these pubs - and others before - drew much of their trade from the shipyards and marine engineering concerns.

Returning to where Erik Sorensen's pub stood, the Charing Cross area has changed completely and the only pubs remaining in the vicinity are The Foundry in Crescent Street and the Carnock in the street of the same name.
