POP Idol winner Michelle McManus will appear as a guest DJ at a special youth event in Greenock this month.

Young people involved in Inverclyde's youth strategy group have organised an action-packed day and an evening disco on Wednesday 18 October to liven up the school holiday.

And with the support of the council's community support services, they managed to secure the services of the singing star.

Youth strategy group member Jennifer Cauley said: 'We decided young people would be encouraged to attend the consultations in the afternoon if they knew Michelle was coming to DJ at night. She is a motivational person and young people can learn a lot from what she has achieved. She is very supportive.' Michelle Conway, from community support services, told the Tele: 'Michelle felt it was important to support an event like this where the young people are arranging it. She thinks it's quite intriguing.

`The young people listen to Michelle's show on the radio and the ones I've spoken to are looking forward to seeing her. It's something different from what we normally do.' At the afternoon event young people will be able to take part in archery, badminton and graffiti art sessions, and have the chance to air their views about Inverclyde's youth strategy.

Only youngsters who participate in activities and consultations during the day event - from 1 until 5pm in Greenock Sports Centre - are eligible to receive a free ticket to the under-18s disco in Word Up that evening. The disco runs from 7 to10pm.
