A SPRING festival should be organised to help Gourock celebrate a glorious year.

That"s the plea of local councillor George White, who has written to Inverclyde Council bosses asking them to plan a Gala Week which would help the town mark two magical milestones.

The town"s outdoor swimming pool, known as the "jewel in Inverclyde"s crown", is around 100 years old, while the town"s status as a burgh is also coming up for an important anniversary - having been established 150 years ago, in 1858.

Mr White feels this would be the perfect time to party - and is sure everyone would be happy to join in.

He said: 'I have formally requested the council gives consideration to holding a Gourock Gala Week.

'There are so many things happening this year for the town. Not only do we have the anniversary of the pool, this year is also the 150th anniversary of Gourock being made a burgh.

'It is a special year for the town.' The councillor told the Tele he would like a series of events lined up for late spring and has now asked Aubrey Fawcett, Inverclyde Council"s regeneration and resources chief, to back a gala.

He added: 'Hopefully, we could get a week of events to coincide with the Highland Games and the opening of the pool. I think this would be popular.' A council spokesman said: 'A comprehensive events strategy for Inverclyde is currently being produced.

'The strategy will go before committee in the near future.'
