MORE than 1,000 people visited Greenock's new fire museum, revised figures from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue have revealed.
The fire service has branded the opening of the museum and heritage centre a 'runaway success' after a huge surge of people flocked to the facility below the Municipal Buildings in its first weekend.
The centre features exhibitions including hand-drawn pumps and the first breathing apparatus sets to today's state-of-the-art safety equipment.
There are also displays on major incidents tackled by firefighters over the years, including the Cheapside, Kilbirnie Street and Stockline disasters and the attack on Glasgow Airport.
The museum is the result of a partnership between SFR, Inverclyde Council and the SFR Preservation Group.
Following the success of its opening weekend from Friday to Sunday, the museum will be open again this Sunday from noon to 4pm.
