A MAN was robbed last night as he made his way home from Greenock town centre.

The 33-year-old was attacked by three males at an entrance to the Wellpark, near Cathcart Street, at 5.25pm and a two figure sum stolen.

An unknown item - believed to be a weapon - was presented at the victim, who was then threatened with violence.

He was forced to hand over money before the trio made off through the park.

The first suspect is described as between 30 and 35-years-old, 5ft 9', of skinny build with a large scar down the right side of his face.

He was wearing a dark zipper jacket.

The second person was around 5ft 6' and skinny, while the third man was 5ft 10', skinny, with greasy hair.

He was wearing a dark jacket with blue logo.

Meanwhile, police are also probing a second incident where a 53-year-old woman had her handbag stolen in Athole Terrace last night.

She was approached by a man near to the stairway there at around 6.30pm, who then demanded her handbag and contents before making off.

The bag contained a three figure cash sum and personal belongings, including bank cards.

The woman, who was unhurt but left badly shaken, described the man as wearing a black top with white writing on the left corner and dark trousers.

Detective Inspector David Wagstaff, of Greenock CID, said: "We would ask anyone who may have seen the trio of men involved in the Wellpark robbery to come forward.

"These people may have been hanging around the town centre prior to the incident, or they may have been seen running off.

"With regard to the handbag theft, we would ask anyone who finds a handbag or items discarded to contact us immediately so we can carry out further enquiries."

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact Greenock CID on 492500 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
