POLICE have now arrested the man they detained earlier today in connection with the death of Elaine Doyle in 1986.

He is now expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Monday.

The 48-year-old was detained in the early hours of this morning during a swoop on an address in Greenock's Trafalgar Street.

It is almost 27 years since Elaine, pictured, died.

She was only 16 when her body was found just yards from her home in Ardgowan Street on 2 June 1986.

She had been on a night out at the Celtic Supporters' Club in Laird Street earlier that evening.

The tragic teenager walked to Cathcart Square for a burger with a friend before heading home alone - the last time she was seen alive.

Police have never stopped their search for the killer.

Their inquiry, Operation Evergreen, has followed up leads across the globe and even involved Interpol.

In 2011 - on the 25th anniversary of Elaine's death - police launched a high profile appeal which included a reconstruction on the BBC's Crimewatch programme.

Elaine's dad Jack, who was unwell at the time, also made a heart-rending, renewed appeal for help.

Detectives on the cold case investigation team received hundreds of calls in the aftermath of the anniversary appeals, which left them looking at 70 names as possible suspects.

Hi-tech advances in forensic techniques and painstaking work behind the scenes over the years had enabled them to gather a crucial DNA profile of Elaine's attacker.

They hoped that the profile would be matched up with a name and even asked authorities in Australia to test six people.

But as the investigation continued, there was further terrible tragedy for the Doyle family when Elaine's nephew - Jack - was murdered in Greenock in January last year.

The killing meant that Elaine's dad and his wife, Maureen, had lost their grandson as well as their precious daughter.

Mr Doyle snr, was seriously ill in Ardgowan Hospice at the time and he passed away just days after Jack's death.

Late last year a 19-year-old was found guilty of murdering Jack and jailed for life.
