FOUR Inverclyde artists opened a new exhibition over the weekend at Greenock's McLean Museum.

The 'Light & Shade' event features paintings by Graeme Nicol, Angus Paton, Jim Owens and Robert Marshall.

They say they are passionate about art and have a shared vision to take Scottish art to a wider audience.

The exhibition offers something for everyone, say the artists, and they hope it will capture the imagination of visitors and give them an insight into a range of Scottish contemporary art themes and ideas.

Graeme told the Tele he is absorbed with creating art that captures the essence and atmosphere of Scotland's people and landscape.

He said: "I also enjoy producing abstract art that deals directly with interpreting inner emotions and the subconscious.

"While I produce work in all media, I favour acrylic, as the speed of drying allows fast capture of my evolving thoughts."

Self-taught Angus said he is inspired by the human portrait and future.

He said: "I'm drawn to their unmatched power to evoke an emotional response.

"I work in oils, as they provide the greatest variety of visual and textural effects and the richest colour of any single medium.

"I like to create art which reflects the complex and changing world of today, while respecting the rich tradition of the past."

Jim said he has been painting all of his life and was fortunate enough to study under Scottish oil painter Alex Galt.

Jim said: "My inspiration comes from everyday scenes of Scotland, from the peole to the landscapes.

"I paint in oils, acrylic and mixed media, following a loose impressionistic style."

Robert is a self-taught artist with more than 30 years of experience.

He said: "I work mainly in oils and acrylic, but find any medium a wonderful expedition into the unknown.

"Although I've travelled extensively, my main preference is the west coast of Scotland, which has an endless supply of wonderful scenery and subjects."

The exhibition runs until Saturday 1 June, except Sundays.

The showcase has something for everyone to enjoy - including a children's worksheet and competition.

It contains questions about art, things to find in the pictures and a drawing competition which is suitable for any age.

There will be 10 winners selected, who will each receive a pack of Staedtler Noris Club coloured pencils.
