TRAVELLERS are now at three different places in Inverclyde after vehicles parked up at James Watt Dock yesterday.

Around five caravans set up camp on private, River Clyde Homes-owned land at James Watt Dock in Greenock, adjacent to Inverclyde Council's roads depot and recycling centre in Pottery Street.

It's the third illegal camp to spring up in the area, with travellers also based at Parklea playing fields and at Kelburn Business Park in Port Glasgow.

River Clyde Homes bosses say they will launch action against the travellers.

Jim Aird, director of business support, told the Telegraph: "It has come to our attention that travelling people have moved onto our land at James Watt Dock.

"This is private property and we are taking the appropriate steps to have the travellers removed." The Telegraph understands that sheriff officers will now be asked to serve an eviction notice on the group.

Meanwhile, court action is expected to be launched by the council to remove the travellers who have based themselves at Parklea.

They had been given until yesterday by sheriff officers to move from the site.

Inverclyde Council is currently consulting on a proposal to create an official 50,000 'short-term transit' site for travellers at Port Glasgow's Kelburn Park.

It says that establishing the site would make it easier to deal with any unauthorised encampments elsewhere but opposition has been voiced about the proposals.

The first consultation drop-in-session will be held at Port Glasgow Library today from 1-3pm.
