SUPER skaters are celebrating five years of fun at the Waterfront Leisure complex.

Waterfront Ice Skating Group started with 20 skaters but since then has more than tripled its membership.

Kirsty Jamieson, chairwoman of the group, said: “Skating itself has become more popular.

“There’s the ‘Learn to Skate’ programme which has awards at bronze, silver and gold levels.

“Most members join the club after progressing from the programme.

“The kids thoroughly enjoy it.” The group has members as young as eight, right up to its oldest member, talented Laura Clarke, 19.

The club runs two sessions on a Saturday with another on the Sunday to meet demand.

Kirsty said: “I think it’s great.

“Both of my kids went through the programme. My daughter Niamh, who is 13 now, learned to skate when she was six and became interested in the sport through the television programme Dancing on Ice.

“She’s made a lot of good friends and they all get on really well in the group.” A special fancy dress Halloween session is being held between 4pm and 6.30pm on Saturday.
