PORT Glasgow Victoria fighter Grant Quigley won the western district’s title with a knockout performance at Glasgow’s Marriott Hotel.

The Port puncher only needed 40 seconds to knock out his opponent from Blantyre, Davie Jamieson.

Grant moved up a division to light heavyweight but still proved too strong, taking his opponent down with a short right hand.

This was the first time he boxed without a head guard under the new rules.

This victory comes on the back of his last fight when he took 30 seconds to finish his opponent.

His punching power has been great this season, with well over half his fights won by knock out or stoppage.

But this has had its problems with few boxers now willing to take on Grant in Scotland. The fighter is still chasing a Commonwealth place in Glasgow and hopes to return to the Scottish international team soon.

The club are now having to travel with Grant to either England, Ireland or abroad to secure bouts to help give him any chance of winning next year’s Scottish championships and a Commonwealth place.

Anyone who can assist in Grant’s preparation with travel costs would be appreciated.

The club were recently sponsored by 2020 Renewables for Natalie McKay’s Commonwealth preparation with a tournament in Germany.

Without this help it would not be possible to attend some competitions.
