GREENOCK hockey star Gordon McIntyre played a crucial role as Scotland staged a stunning comeback victory to keep their Commonwealth Games hopes alive yesterday.
The Scots were right up against it as they found themselves trailing 3-1 at half-time against Wales, with Richard Gay wasting no time in hitting a hat-trick for the Welshmen.
But Scotland came storming back — with McIntyre the key catalyst for their stunning revival.
The former Inverclyde Sports Personality of the Year netted a tap-in from close range to get his side back into the game just after the break.
He urged the crowd to help lift the side as he celebrated — and then his penalty corner just a couple of minutes later paved the way for Scotland to net the equaliser.
There were wild celebrations with under 10 minutes left on the clock when Nicholas Parkes capped the turnaround, putting Scotland 4-3 ahead, and they held on to secure the dramatic victory.
McIntyre’s fellow former Greenock Hockey Club colleague William Marshall also played in the memorable win, which gets the host nation back on track after they opened their Group A campaign with disappointing defeats against South Africa and India.
Scotland face Australia in their final group clash on Thursday.
