A PORT man who put his hands around a woman’s neck during a terrifying assault has been ordered to carry out a community payback order as punishment.

Edward Glancy, 40, assaulted his former partner at an address in Newton Street in Greenock on 28 May.

Greenock Sheriff Court heard that the frightened victim had called the police to tell them: ‘I don’t have much time’.

Depute fiscal Pamela Brady said the incident happened some two months after the pair had split up and the woman had started a new relationship.

Mrs Brady said: “He put his hand against her throat and pushed her, whereby she fell.

“She shouted that she couldn’t breath.

“She telephoned police and told them ‘I’m having a domestic, I don’t have much time’.” The call sent officers immediately rushing to the scene to intervene.

Ms Brady added that when police arrived at the address they found the woman ‘crying and distressed’ claiming she had been assaulted.

Mr Glancy’s solicitor, Andrew Kennedy, said: “It was a time when passions ran high.” Glancy, of Iona Road, also pled guilty to possession of cannabis on the same date as the domestic violence incident.

Sheriff Derek Livingston considered Glancy’s record before deciding how to sentence him.

He told him: “You have previous convictions for assault, but none since 2006.

“You will carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.”
