The new fast food bar will be located within the town’s Spar store on Princes Street, pictured, and will begin operating at the end of this month.

Dundee-based firm CJ Lang and Son — which runs Spar shops throughout Scotland — is behind the development.

The new Port enterprise will be the 10th Subway to be opened within its Spar stores in the last 12 months.

Marketing manager Gerry Walsh told the Telegraph that the company was ‘delighted’ to be able to embrace the Subway brand.

Mr Walsh said: “It will give our store in Port Glasgow the ability to offer customers great value subs, salads and flatbreads made fresh in front of them.

“We are delighted to develop a new partnership with the Subway brand and to be able to bring additional jobs to the Port Glasgow area.

“Spar Scotland is constantly looking for innovative solutions to develop our stores and meet the needs of our ever evolving customer base.” Subway also confirmed the Port Glasgow franchise deal and job creation package to the Telegraph.

A company spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a new Subway will be opening in the Spar store located at 59 Princes Street in Port Glasgow.

“The new Subway is due to open at the end of this month and it is expected that nine new jobs will be created.” Spar marketing boss Mr Walsh said: “The Subway partnership has got off to a great start and the Port Glasgow outlet will be the 10th to be opened by the company since last year.

“The partnership allows two strong brands to work together for mutual benefit and the introduction of a Subway store is a natural complement to our existing Spar offer.” Family-owned Spar operators CJ Lang and Son represents the largest independent convenience store operator in Scotland, with nearly 2,000 employees and 120 stores located across the country.

The company owns and operates the Spar brand in Scotland and in addition their own estate also supplies a further 200 independently owned outlets, such as local businessman Billy Kay’s award-winning South Street store in Greenock.
