A PORT gym is to get a new lease of life thanks to a £90,000 boost.

The board of Inverclyde Leisure (IL) has approved plans to upgrade the facility at Boglestone Community Centre.

The investment includes new equipment and the introduction of a cut price one month membership deal which could work out at under £20.

Councillor James McColgan, who sits on the IL board, today welcomed the improvement to the facility in his ward.

He said: “The cost of going to the gym can sometimes be a barrier and I believe that it should be affordable for everyone.

“Boglestone Community Centre is a highly valued local facility in Port Glasgow and I know that the refurbishment of the gym together with a new affordable price will be welcomed.” David McCorkindale, head of leisure and community for Inverclyde Leisure, says the final costs of the refurbishment and affordable gym model are still to be finalised.

The work at Boglestone is part of a major drive to upgrade facilities and offer customers a personal package to suit their budget.

He said: “The equipment up at Boglestone Gym hasn’t been upgraded since 2009 and it was time for an update, similar to that at the Waterfront Centre in Greenock.

“We’ve opened the crossfit gym at Greenock Sports Centre, which offers a more personal training programme, and we are looking at the affordable fitness model.

“We’ve upgraded the Waterfront to a techno gym, which will be introduced in Birkmyre and Gourock too.

“We have a very diverse range of packages people can choose from and run lots of classes. There are exciting times ahead.” The affordable membership package will also be rolled out at Ravenscraig Sports Centre.

It is hoped the Boglestone refurbishment will be completed in May.
