MORTON supporters are set to pitch in and help the club’s youth academy by taking on Cappielow legends in a special fundraising match this weekend.

The annual fans’ game kicks off on Sunday featuring former first team stars Derek Lilley, Craig McPherson and Warren Hawke.

Two lucky Tele readers will also have the chance to play in the match thanks to organisers, the Greenock Morton Supporters’ Trust (GMST). The match helps raise thousands of pounds for the Morton youth set-up every year.

Allan Feeney, a GMST board member, said: “It’s shaping up nicely and looking like we’ll make £3,000-£4,000.

“This year we are hoping to raise a bit more than we usually do thanks to the company that makes the club’s strips – Vision – as they have kindly donated the kit for the fans’ game for free.

“That will help raise more money because that’s the biggest cost.

“We’ve also secured a sponsor from Peter McLellan, of McLellan and Bence Consultants Ltd.”

The organisers are working hard to add some more ex Ton icons to the lineups before kick off at 1pm on Sunday.

Allan, who is also playing in the match, said: “It’s great to get onto the pitch and play.

“It’s a bit unusual going in and you get the full warm-up and stuff as well.

“This is the ultimate experience for any Morton fan, it’ll be worth the sore legs at work on Monday morning.

“This is all for a worthy cause too as people are starting to see that youth players are getting a chance in the first team and doing well.”
