ENTERPRISING nursery kids are trading in healthy eating after winning a Dragon’s Den-inspired challenge.

Youngsters at Blairmore Nursery stood in front of a panel to win backing for their fruit and veg stall.

Local entrepreneurs from PG Paper and Smiths pledged their support for the venture.

Blairmore has now invested the £180 into its real-life market stall and is doing a roaring trade in fresh fruit.

Gran Isabella McMaster was first in the queue to bag her apples and oranges from grandson Noah.

She said: “I think this is a great wee idea and I will certainly be buying my fruit here.

“It is a great way to learn about healthy eating and encourage the wee ones to eat fruit.”

The nursery secured the funding after taking part in the challenge and the children went shopping to pick their produce.

Now they sell it to their families from their stall every Wednesday.

Every week the youngsters take on different roles in the stall, pricing the fruit and counting it out for each customer.

It’s part of the nursery’s work on the curriculum for excellence and their commitment to promoting healthy living.

Family support worker Jacqui Jack is delighted with the early success of the scheme.

She said: “The children did a great job in the presentation.

“It was so good the panel upped their offer from £100 to £180.

“We are starting off with the fresh fruit and will be looking at expanding into fruit kebabs and smoothies.

“It offers so many opportunities for the children to learn and improve their numeracy and literacy.”
