CONTRACTORS behind a £2m Greenock community centre are building relations with nursery pupils next door.

CCG Scotland are currently working on the new Broomhill community and horticultural facility on Mearns Street and invited excited youngsters from Wellpark Children’s Centre just across the road for a tour of the site.

The boys and girls have been keeping a close eye on the development since work started in October and were delighted to be given the chance to pull on their welly boots and hi-vis vests.

They were given a safety demonstration and shown a video by site boss Stuart Andrews and assistant manager John Birrell in the office before heading out to see the diggers and forklifts in action.

AnnMarie Cunningham, Wellpark’s depute head of centre, said: “The children visited the site to learn about the role of the builder.

“They have spent the year watching the site and learning about builders.

“We feel it is important that the children feel involved in the community and take pride in their environment.”

Despite poor weather conditions of late, the construction team are still on course to complete the building in May ahead of the planned opening in June.

Staff were delighted to welcome their Mearns Street neighbours on site on what was a rare, sunny day on Friday.

Site manager Stuart said: “CCG as a company is big on community benefits, it’s not just about the building we are handing over but integrating with the community.

“The children are fascinated by the work so it was great to get them over and see what’s happening.

“It’s coming along well.

“It’s been difficult with the wet and very cold weather but we’re on programme and everything is going well.”
