KIND-hearted members and friends of Whinhill Golf Club have raised more than £3,000 for charities through a sponsored walk from their fairways to the centre of Largs.

Their three chosen charities — GAIN (Guillain-Barré & Associated Inflammatory Neuropathies), the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation for vasculitis patients — will now share in a record total of £3,270.

The club has done an annual walk to Largs since 2007, initially to raise cash for their own centenary fund until 2011, but has kept the tradition going no matter the weather to help other worthwhile causes.

Forty-one walkers, including members of Whinhill’s junior section, took part in the 12-mile hike to Largs this time around.

Gary Havlin of the club said: “Special thanks should be paid to Sharon McCauley and Teresa O’ Donnell for providing a meal and a drink for the walkers after the walk and to Frank McNeill and Hardies Coaches for providing the bus back to the club from Largs at the conclusion of the event.”

Grant Currie, founder and trustee of the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation, said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved at Greenock Whinhill Golf Club.”

“This donation will go towards our continued support services, awareness campaigning, and medical research funding.”
