ASPIRING authors from Inverclyde Academy have proved they have the ‘write stuff’ after putting pen to paper to produce their own book.

The talented teenagers, who are all in second year, worked closely with famous local author Cathy MacPhail to publish a collection of captivating stories based on Inverclyde.

They launched their anthology, which is entitled ‘Tales from the Dark Side of Inverclyde’ at a special literary event in the school this week.

Susan Morton, who is the school librarian, said the project — which was funded by the Scottish Book Trust — ignited everyone’s imaginations.

She told the Tele: “It was fantastic fun and the pupils did amazingly well.

“I wanted the launch to be a grown-up literary event which was formal yet exciting — and that’s exactly what it was.

“The pupils invited their mums, dads and grandparents to the event and I was absolutely thrilled that so many of them turned out to show their support.”

During the launch, 27 pupils talked about the work behind the book before senior pupils asked them questions about the initiative.

The students then read out extracts of the stories.
Susan added: “Their stories are all different but they are all based in Inverclyde.

“Every story also has a twist.

“The book cover was also designed by the pupils. The whole experience has been great as they have learned valuable writing and design skills while also enjoying the chance to talk to the audience about their stories.”

As part of the project, pupils enjoyed six months of workshops with award-winning author Cathy before collating their stories for the book.

Susan was keen to thank Cathy, the Scottish Book Trust and Mary Thomson from Whitewater Publishing for their support.

The book is now being stocked in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh and is also available to buy from the school by phoning 715100.
