GREENOCK actor Martin Compston showed real team spirit after stepping in to help kit out his old club for the new season.

The Line of Duty star read of Greenock Juniors’ cash-strapped plight in the Tele after we revealed how the club had almost gone to the wall.

Martin instantly put his showbiz contacts book to good use to help out.

The actor, who played for the club for a short time after leaving Morton as a teenager, found a sponsor to hand over new tracksuits and also dug deep himself to help boost the club coffers, making a donation of £500 from his own pocket.

Martin told the Tele: “Being a Greenock lad, and a former player, I have a great affinity for the Juniors and was saddened to hear they had some financial difficulties.

“When my friends took over management of the team I was delighted when they asked me to get involved.

“I had a think about how I could help out and asked my friends at Haddon PR if any labels could assist.

“They approached 17London, quite a prestigious streetwear brand, and they have been fantastic right from the kick off.

“They offered to donate 25 tracksuits free of charge, which on its own was a great gesture.

“I’m chuffed with the design – I think they look superb and they have gone down a treat with the players.

“It is nice that the lads will be going to matches sporting a bit of style.”

Martin added: “I also decided to give them a few quid to help them get the season up and running.

“There are a load of costs involved with running a club like the Juniors and hopefully the money will help them kick on and have a great season.”

Club manager Thomas Molloy said he was delighted with the new kit, adding: “Martin’s an old school friend and he’s my assistant Shaun Dillon’s best pal, so we asked him for a favour.

“As everyone knows, the club wasn’t in a great position.

“Martin got these tracksuits for all the players and staff and it’s been a massive help and we are over the moon.

“We couldn’t have bought them otherwise – some players have had the same tracksuit for a number of years.

“I’ve known Martin since primary school and used to play for Greenock Juniors with him.

“It was great to have him along to hand over the kit.

“He stayed and watched our game and it was nice to get a victory while he was here.”
