A MAJOR investigation has been launched after an attempted murder in Greenock.

A man in his thirties was viciously attacked in the Grieve Road area yesterday at around 4.20pm.

Police Scotland say he was set upon by a number of males and was left badly injured.

He is in hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.

A spokeswoman today confirmed they are treating the incident as an attempted murder.

It's believed a weapon was used in the attack, which led to the car park behind the Grieve Road shops being sealed off, along with Auchneagh Farm Lane.

Detectives are said to be following a number of lines of enquiry as they search for the attackers.
