DETECTIVES are hunting a gang of bogus workmen who ripped off a Gourock man for 'thousands of pounds'.

The three fraudsters had been supposedly carrying out high value external work at a property on the town's Taymouth Drive.

But DC Gordon Gibson of Greenock CID said today: "The work done was minimal.

"A 56-year-old man has handed over a large sum of money to them, which is in the thousands.

"We are now looking to speak to three men."

It is understood that the conmen had been visiting the property over a period of three weeks but have now vanished.

The ringleader is described as an 'older heavy set man' with dark hair.

His accomplices are said to be younger, thin males with light-coloured hair.

Police are also keen to trace a maroon-coloured people carrier vehicle and a blue Ford saloon car which the men are understood to have been using.

Anyone with any information regarding the matter is asked to contact Greenock CID as a matter of urgency on the 101 number, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
