ALL trains to and from Inverclyde have been cancelled and buses will be off from 5pm as a fierce snowstorm hits the district.

Conditions have deteriorated steadily in the area throughout the day.

Upper lying areas were quickly blanketed during the course of the morning but snow is now lying on lower roads through the area, with conditions quickly becoming treacherous everywhere.

Public transport has been badly affected.

ScotRail has withdrawn all of its services between Gourock and Wemyss Bay and Glasgow.

The operator says a full shutdown of all the routes it operates will apply from 6pm tonight until at least 10am tomorrow.

McGill's has announced it will be suspending all buses in Inverclyde from 5pm this evening. The company had already called a halt to its Clyde Flyer route between Inverclyde and Glasgow.

Many workplaces closed early for the day and all local schools and nurseries will remain shut on Thursday.
