OUTRAGED Greenock residents have hit out after mindless vandals went on the rampage in their street — slashing more than 20 car tyres.

People living in Lemmon Street were livid when they woke up and discovered a full row of cars parked outside their homes had been damaged.

They are now counting the cost of the spree, totalling hundreds of pounds.

At least 10 cars in the quiet residential street were targeted by the yobs.

Angry John Currie, 75, who has lived in the street for 22 years, said: “It is the fact that they are carrying knives to do this.

“They have walked down the middle of the road and just slashed all the tyres.

“It is only the outside tyres that were touched.

“Nobody heard a thing and we didn’t realise until the next morning.

“The cars are all in a row and they were damaged right round the corner.

“One woman had a wing mirror broken as well.

“What fun is there in doing this to people, what do they get out of it?”

John says he has never seen an incident such as this in the street.

He told the Tele: “This is a quiet street. In the past we have had cars scratched, but nothing like this. It makes you angry.

“One lady had to pay £60 for one tyre. Two of my tyres have been done and there is no way they will be saved.”

The cars were vandalised overnight between 5.30pm on Monday and early Tuesday morning.

Another resident, Campbell McFadyen, 68, had one tyre on his car slashed.

He said: “They have stuck it in and made a hole. We are going to report it to the police but you think what is the point? They will get a slap on the wrist.”

Earlier in the day teens had set fire to a hedge in Lemmon Street, which runs alongside Drumfrochar Railway Station.

Sergeant Kayley Teasdale said: “It appears that the vehicles were intact on Monday evening and then were discovered damaged as their owners were preparing for work the next day.”

Anyone who can help with the investigation should contact Greenock police on the 101 number, or ring in anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
