FORMER Provost Robert Moran is ready to run shoulders with the Royals again - as a guest at Prince Harry's wedding.

The Greenock councillor was stunned to find out he was among 1,200 members of the public invited to the social event of the year.

It comes six years after he was given the greatest of honours as Provost - welcoming the Queen to Greenock on her Diamond Jubilee year.

Robert was nominated to attend the Royal Wedding by the Lord Lieutenant, in recognition of his efforts that day to help pull off such an unforgettable visit.

On May 19 Robert and his partner Margaret will be in the grounds of Windsor Castle to share the day with the Prince and his bride American actress Meghan Markle.

Robert, 64, from Greenock said: "It is a great honour to be invited. I can't quite believe it. I have a great respect for Prince Harry as he is a former soldier and has served in Afghanistan. My brother Thomas was in the forces and has toured there as well.

"Prince Harry has also done great work with the injured soldiers."

Back in 2012 Robet had only just taken over as Provost and found himself greeting the Queen on her visit to Greenock as thousands lined the streets.

Robert said: "Welcoming the Queen to Greenock was without a doubt the greatest honour. I was only a few weeks in my role as Provost.

"I was so nervous but the Queen and the Duke put everyone at ease. They are so natural and it was a tremendous honour. It was a great day."

Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan will tie the knot at St George's Chapel with other guests including the Queen, Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Robert, who is a councillor for Inverclyde East Central, said: "We are all set to go.

"My partner Margaret works at Cloch Housing and they are all excited for her."

Lord Lieutenant Guy Clark struck up a great friendship with Robert while carrying out their civic duties.

He said: "I wanted Robert to be recognised, which is why I nominated him.

"He was such a great support to myself when I was organising the Queen's visit.

"It turned out to be one of the happiest days I remember in Greenock."
