A PORT butcher has proved he is a cut above for producing the best steak in the UK.

Drew McKenzie, of Robert Alexander in Princes Street, saw off red hot competition from the best in Britain to win the title.

He picked up a gold award at the Q Guild of Butchers National BBQ Award finals to add to his ever-expanding list of industry prizes.

Drew said: "It’s an amazing result.

"The steak is the epitome of the BBQ, and to think that the best in the country comes from our shop in Port Glasgow, it’s an incredible feeling to be recognised in this way.”

The competition took place on at Aubrey Park Hotel in Hertfordshire.

Judges looked at a range of criteria to pick the winner, this included visual appeal, commerciality, presentation and, taste.

The expert panel included Karl Pendlebury AHDB Beef and Lamb and Tom Lavelle from The Alfresco Chef.

They described the winning entry, saying: "The rump steak from Robert Alexander ticked all the boxes for a great BBQ steak, good texture, flavour and tenderness.”

Drew also reached the final in the burger and speciality burger categories.

The BBQ Awards are held annually and are open to any of the 100 plus members of the Q Guild of Butchers throughout the UK.

The seven regional heats, which took place in March, April and early May covering Scotland, Wales, South, South West, North East, North West.

The six BBQ product categories were steak, traditional sausage, burger, speciality sausage, speciality burger and speciality BBQ product.
