COMMUNITY groups and people in Inverclyde are being encouraged to hold get-togethers in memory of MP Jo Cox.

The Great Get Together is an initiative inspired by the circumstances surrounding the murder of Ms Cox and aims to encourage cohesion through the organisation of community led events.

Inverclyde councillors agreed to support the UK-wide initiative — which runs from June 22-24 — at a meeting of the policy and resources committee.

A report to the committee set out a plan to offer small amounts up to £350 to groups and individuals in the community to plan events.

Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Jim MacLeod said: “I think this is a great idea.

“It is a great thing to have in memory of Jo Cox.

“What happened still shocks me and I would encourage individuals and organisations to get involved with this.”

Following the meeting council leader and committee convener Stephen McCabe told the Tele: “The death of Jo Cox was an appalling tragedy and one that shocked the country.

“The Great Get Together is a wholly positive initiative aimed at bringing people together.

“Given the way Jo lived her life and her work in parliament, it is a very good way of remembering her and helping to build bridges and encourage people to do simple things like spending time with friends and neighbours or encouraging young people to play together.”

Residents and groups looking to hold an event as part of the Great Get-Together are asked to email events@inverclyde.gov.uk to find out about council support.
