TRAIN bosses have launched a scheme giving Inverclyde customers free journeys this summer as a 'thank-you' for putting up with uncomfortable old carriages.

ScotRail yesterday is inviting local season pass holders to enjoy the beauty of Scotland with free tickets to anywhere in the country.

The offer will run during June, July and August.

Any customer with a season ticket to or from stations on the Inverclyde line during those months will be able to claim a complimentary anytime return for each of those months between any two stations on the company's network.

The offer is only for local passengers and has been launched following a campaign by MSP Stuart McMillan, which he raised with transport minister Humza Yousaf.

Mr McMillan said: "I welcome this initiative, which will enable free travel for many of my constituents.

"After my campaigning to have some recompense for the extended utilisation of the old Class 314 trains being used locally, I am pleased there will be some type of payback for my constituents.

"I encourage all season ticket holders to take up this offer over the summer months."

The trips must be taken before the end of September 2018.

Customers using their complimentary tickets will be able to bring up to two children under-15 with them free of charge, making it even easier to enjoy a family day out.

Graham Heald, ScotRail Alliance head of customer experience, said: "While our Scottish summers aren't always famous for their sunny weather, we're sure this offer to reward the loyalty of our Inverclyde season ticket customers will brighten their day.

"There's no better time to get out and see Scotland, so why not swap Fort Matilda for Fort William, Inverkip for Inverness, or Drumfrochar for Dumfries?"

The free tickets can only be claimed from the ScotRail website.
