COUNCILLORS have approved plans for a new £21m health centre in Greenock.

The facility will be built on the site of the former Wellington Academy school between Dempster Street and Wellington Street.

It will replace the existing health centre at nearby Duncan Street, which is in poor condition.

Members of Inverclyde Planning Board agreed unanimously this afternoon to rubber stamp the application.

They gave the green light despite significant concerns having been raised by roads and transport experts about the location of the site and accessibility.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport had raised questions about the chosen location, arguing that its suitability had been overstated, but planning officials had recommended approval.
