A GOUROCK man is in line to become a millionaire through an amazing £1 bet on the World Cup.

The Inverclyde punter predicted a remarkable string of events in the Serbia v Brazil match on Wednesday night, landing him a 12,721/1 shot staked using an online 'build-a-bet' accumulator.

A £5,000 bonus means he has already scooped over £17,500 for his forecast and is now leading the way in BetVictor's Million Pound Bet promotion which centres around the tournament in Russia.

The promotion guarantees a £1m bonus to the person who puts together the bet with the biggest cumulative odds over the duration of the tournament - with the Gourock football fan leading the way going into the last 16 stage.

He saw his bet come in after a combination of corners, cards and goals from Paulinho and Thiago Silva led Brazil to a 2-0 victory.

When contacted by the Tele for a comment, the man, who we have chosen not to name, said: "I'd rather not say anything at the minute.

"I don't want to tempt fate."

The local had to endure a nervous final 15 minutes to the match as Brazil squandered a series of chances to score a third goal which would have left him empty-handed.

He is currently leading the way with just 16 matches left.

The blockbuster accumulator is by far the largest to come up so far, at odds of more than 3,000/1 ahead of the second placed bet which was landed at odds of 9,635/1 from the South Korea v Mexico clash.

A spokesman for BetVictor told the Tele: “We can confirm a customer from Great Britain placed a winning bet at odds of 12,720/1, and currently leads the Million Pound Bet leaderboard.

“We are unable to provide details about the winner in accordance with the competition’s terms and conditions.”

The competition will close after the final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on July 15.
