A LARGE grass fire raged at Lyle Hill close to the course at Greenock Golf Club for four hours on Thursday night.

Fifteen firefighters tackled the flames using grass beaters on the gorse bushes and water from hose reel jets.

Greenock station watch manager Adrian Rice said: “We don’t know if it was started accidentally or deliberately but it had the potential to be very dangerous.

“It the wind was blowing in a different direction it would have posed a risk to houses nearby.”

Three fire engines were called to the scene.

Watch manager Rice added: “We used grass beaters. It is very hard work especially in the heat.

“It took us four hours to get it under control.

“We have had a spate of grass fires recently.”

The golf course was not damaged by the blaze, which was reported at 4.30pm.
