A GREENOCK man who flouted a driving ban has been sent to prison.

Mohammed Sadiq was caught behind the wheel of a BMW 5 series car whilst disqualified.

The 40-year-old had also only completed 34 hours of a 200-hour unpaid work order for a previous driving offence.

A sheriff told him: "You are someone who simply ignores court orders.

"Custody is the only appropriate sentence."

Sadiq, of Lawers Place, was spotted driving the car near his home at around 8.30am on July 21.

Prosecutor John Penman said: "Officers stopped the vehicle and it was only the accused who was within the car.

"A computer check showed that he is disqualified from driving.

"The accused stated, 'I was only going to pick up my mum'."

Defence lawyer Aidan Gallagher urged Sheriff Derek Hamilton to place his client on an electronic tagging curfew.

Mr Gallagher said: "Mr Sadiq resides at the parental home and helps his parents because they are not in good health.

"His mother is to have surgery on both of her knees.

"Mr Sadiq took the decision to go an pick his mother up and the distance driven, I am told, only takes a couple of minutes.

"It was wholly the wrong decision and he accepts that with hindsight."

Sheriff Hamilton declared: "I have no confidence that he will undertake a community payback order."

Turning to Sadiq, the lawman said: "You were given a substantial community payback order in 2016, and here you are ignoring court orders again."

The sheriff banned him from the roads for three years and sentenced him to 163 days imprisonment.
