A GREENOCK-born woman who was thrown out of a Tesco store for having a Scottish accent said she was 'humiliated and outraged' by the fiasco.

Aileen McKellar, who has lived in England for 30 years, told the Tele that she has been angered and upset by incident at the store in Norwich.

The 65-year-old was stunned when she was confronted by staff and told she was barred because she had been shouting at staff.

It later emerged that she had been mistaken for another woman with a similar Scottish accent.

Gran Aileen, who has limited mobility after suffering severe injuries in hit and run accident in Larkfield Road 40 years ago, used the store regularly because of its proximity to her daughter's home.

Aileen, who grew up in Holmscroft Street and still has family in the town, said: "I haven't stopped crying since it happened.

"I feel so angry and humiliated. I was thrown out of a shop and treated like this for only one reason, because I had a Scottish accent. I am devastated.

"I am in and out of that store because it is close to my daughter's house.

"I am always nice and polite to staff. I would never swear at anyone."

Chiropodist Aileen's ordeal began when she went into the Tesco in Wroxham Road.

She says staff surrounded her when she tried to pay for her groceries and told her she was not to be served.

When she challenged them, and asked why, the woman on the till replied: "Because you are Scottish."

Tesco has since apologised, but Aileen added: "The damage has been done. My English friends and my family in Greenock have been supportive.

"I have had so many kind words. I struggle to get around and use a mobility scooter after I was run down in Larkfield Road all those years ago. The shop was handy for me but I'll never be back."

Aileen left Greenock 40 years ago and lived in Zimbabwe before settling down south.

She has two children, Campbell and Margaret, and six grandchildren.

Tesco confirmed it was a case of mistaken identity and have said Aileen is not banned from the shop.

A Tesco spokesperson added: “We are sorry for the experience Ms McKellar had visiting our Wroxham Road Express.

"Our store manager has called to apologise directly and we would be delighted to welcome her back to store.”
