TWO Greenock teenagers who set sail on a seven-day voyage around Scotland are encouraging other youngsters to follow in their footsteps.

Shaun wiseman, 14, and Bobby Stone, 13, recently returned from an adventure of a lifetime, sailing a 70ft yacht from Oban to their home town.

The Clydeview Academy pupils joined 10 other young people from across the UK on the voyage - organised by Greenock-based Ocean Youth Trust - and say they have made 'friends for life' through the trip.

The boys, who are both keen sailors, were sailing with the group for the first time when they stepped on board.

Shaun said: “I was very excited and a bit nervous to meet the new people but being crew together helped to get to know everyone. Some of us became new friends and will stay in touch.”

Bobby said: “My highlight was the people we met.”

Not only did the group have to steer and navigate the yacht, but they also had to lend a hand with cooking and cleaning.

Nick Fleming, chief executive of Ocean Youth Trust Scotland, was impressed by the commitment of the group.

He said: “The crew was made up of a diverse group of young people from all across the UK. All of them were keen and enthusiastic and overall the trip was a great success with all of the young people getting stuck into life on board.

“I was impressed by the willingness of the group to help out when needed.

“They worked well together and over the course of the week they bonded well."

Shaun had been on the voyage before and asked his pal to accompany him this time around.

Both enjoyed exploring the country's coastline and say they wouldn't hesitate to recommend the trip to others.

Bobby said: “It is great fun to take part and you learn lots. I would do it again. I especially loved our visit to the Isle of Gigha."

Shaun added: “ It’s a really good experience and will look good on your CV.

“I’ve already signed up to come back again next year.”

Mr Fleming added: "Every young person excelled and a number of them have expressed an interest in continuing to learn how to sail and are now thinking about a career in sailing.

“Everyone’s hard work was rewarded as they all gained their RYA Competent Crew qualification.”
