STILL game care residents revelled in a laugh-a-lympics event involving a host of local homes.

They took part in lots of competitions - including a 'toss the slipper' contest - at the 'Go for Gold 2018' extravaganza at Battery Park.

It featured teams from 13 care establishments.

But fun, banter and laughter were the winners on the day as any notion of sporting rivalry took second place to the enjoyment of the occasion.

With team names such as the Newark Ninjas, Sensational Sisters, Glenfield Gunners and Marchmont Marvels there couldn't be anything else but fun.

A beaming Elspeth Stryke, of Merino Court, summed up the day as 'just brilliant', adding: "It's keeping us young and keeping us alive."

Elspeth joked: "There's been no fights, and it's just been good to get out in the fresh air and take part and enjoy everyone's company."

The event was organised as part of a collective Care About Physical Activity (CAPA) programme which has been embraced by all of the homes.

Others taking part in the events, such as netball and egg and spoon races included Bagatelle, Balclutha, Alt-na-Craig and Belleaire.

Staff got in on the act too by taking each other on in a series of tug-o'-war challenges.

Diana Knox, who helped organise the event, said: "All of the teams will come together again for an awards evening next month to celebrate their efforts.

"The inspiration and commitment of all those involved in promoting physical activity is to be commended."

Go for Gold was set up in 2012 by the Care Inspectorate and partners to celebrate the London Olympics and has gone from strength to strength ever since.
