CLYDEVIEW Academy failed to tell parents that an entire class was set to fail an important home economics exam.

Education bosses have admitted that the school knew in February this year that the National 5 pupils were not on track to pass.

But parents told the Tele that they were kept in the dark and led to believe everything was in hand - until a phone call from the school in June.

It is the THIRD time in recent years that there has been controversy surrounding the high achieving school's handling of home economics courses.

Inverclyde Council say changes have now been made and senior staff are monitoring the situation.

But one appalled mum told the Tele of her fury over the fiasco.

She said: "I received a call in June from the school asking my child to spend three days in the department to undertake assessments that were missed.

"This was the first I was alerted to a problem by the school and I was informed it was nothing to worry about.

"But my child has not gained any of the unit assessments and has no achievement at National 5.

"I have raised my concerns with the school but I feel I am not being listened to."

The fourth year pupil was in the National 5 hospitality practical cooking course.

Her mum added: "The entire class failed. My hard working daughter is extremely upset.

"How can a whole class fail their exam? She has nothing to show for a whole year."

There is concern the pupils did not stand a chance of passing because they were not taught the correct coursework.

The Clydeview parent told the Tele: "The quality of teaching my daughter had was shocking. My daughter was not taught the proper course materials and assessments to prepare for the exams. The teacher didn't teach them the correct course information.

"This is not the first time the same department in the school has had problems.

"All the problems have resulted in my daughter and all her classmates failing their National Five exams."

The Tele reported similar problems with home economics at the school last year.

Pupils had to go back in to redo assessment work with only one day's notice because the original papers had been lost.

In a previous year classes failed to pass the National 5 exam.

An Inverclyde Council spokesman said: "This year it became apparent after the prelims in February that students were not on track to pass and extra resources were brought in to ensure they attained at least National 4 which they did.

"There was an issue a number of years ago involving a member of staff who is no longer at the school.

"Last year the department was affected by a long-term absence of a teacher where assessment information was misplaced where students had to repeat the work."

Inverclyde Council have promised that senior management at Clydeview have made changes and are monitoring the situation.

The spokesman added: "Changes have already been made and the situation is being closely monitored by senior staff."

Clydeview Academy is Inverclyde's top performing school for exam results and was among the top 50 state schools in Scotland last year.
