MORTON'S former reserve coach Jonatan Johansson has been appointed as the club's new manager.

The Swedish-born former Finnish international has penned a two-year-deal with the Greenock outfit this afternoon.

The Cappielow side have been looking for a replacement boss since Ray McKinnon dramatically walked out to join Championship rivals Falkirk last Friday, along with his assistant Darren Taylor.

Former Rangers, Charlton Athletic and Malmo striker Johansson had a brief stint with the Greenock club back in 2012 after he had finished his playing career.

He then moved to Motherwell to oversee their under-20s, and spent just under three years with the Steelmen.

The Finn linked up with his national team in December 2016, and was appointed Markku Kanerva's assistant coach for a brief spell.

In April last year he joined Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox as Rangers assistant coach, and was kept on when Graeme Murty took over after Caixinha was sacked.

Johansson has been out of work since Steven Gerrard replaced Murty in the summer.

The 40-year-old is also married to Scottish television presenter Jean Johansson, who hails from Port Glasgow.
