AN inspirational Port Glasgow woman who has raised £50,000 for charity in her mum's memory has been chosen to speak at a major charity event this weekend.

Bernadette Barr from Clune Brae is one of the guest speakers at the Mary's Meals Day in Glasgow - an event to celebrate the work of the charity which helps to feed impoverished children in the third world.

Speaking to the Tele, Bernadette says it's a huge honour as it was at the same event a few years ago which inspired her to help the charity.

She said: "The fact that I've been asked to be a guest speaker in the same hall which inspired me to get involved is amazing.

"There's a lot of people coming from all over the world with representatives from each country that Mary's Meals supports."

Bernadette's mum Rachel Stewart spent years raising tens of thousands of pounds to help feed impoverished children in the third world.

The unassuming and humble mum, who was still raising money right up until she was 80, passed away in October 2016 at the age of 84.

As a tribute, Bernadette decided to continue her mum’s legacy.

By baking delicious cakes, she has raised about £50,000 - 90 per cent of which has been donated to Mary's Meals and 10 per cent to other charities.

Through Mary's Meals, Bernadette also sponsors a school in Africa which is named ‘Rachel’s Kitchen’ after her late mum.

She said: "My mum was still raising money right up until she was about 80 but she was diagnosed with early stage dementia and then she fell and broke her hip while we were on a holiday in Fuerteventura.

“On her 80th birthday I took her to the Mary’s Meals charity day at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow.

“During the day they showed an inspirational short film about the work of Mary’s Meals.

“After watching it she told me she wished she was younger so that she could still help.

“It made me think about all the work she had done for all those years and I started thinking about what I could do to keep her work going.”

The free event is on Sunday at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow.

Doors open at 12.45pm for a 2pm start.
