LOCAL fire crews joined forces with the foodbank to help fight poverty in Inverclyde - collecting over 200 bags of food for needy families.

A team from Port Glasgow's station held a collection for the charity at the Tesco Extra in the town.

They handed over 200 bags of food and a financial donation.

Firefighter Craig Donnelly, who organised the event, said: "It was very successful.

"Around 200 bags were donated to the foodbank and the two collection tins were bulging.

"From our point of view, we are pleased to have been able to take part in a joint initiative to help the community.

"It also gave us a chance to publicise our home fire safety visits, so it was a successful day for us as well as the foodbank guys."

There were also a fire engine and a vintage 1950s engine at the event, which caught the imagination of the community.

Craig said it is something the local crews would like to do again, perhaps visiting another supermarket in the area.

He said: "Port Glasgow is a community fire station, and this was about helping the community.

"We will continue to support the i58 Project, which runs the foodbank, and other good causes."

Reverend Fraser Donaldson, minister of Greenock Elim Church and project board member of the i58 Project, said: "The collection was a huge success and we are hugely grateful to the firefighters who spent their Saturday supporting our work.

"They collected over 500 kilos of food, which was incredible.

"As always the generosity and kindness of the local community in giving to and supporting this collection means that the foodbank is resourced to further support families and individuals who are struggling and in crisis in Inverclyde.”
