KIDS from St Michael's Primary beat tough opposition to win the right to headline this year's Galoshans Festival.

The school's primary seven class are taking part in a unique street band project, fusing together the beat of the drums with the vibrations of the trumpet and trombone.

They will be playing the iconic Ghostbusters song at Inverclyde's huge Halloween spectacular.

Project tutor Mat Clements said: "Most of the kids have never played a trumpet or a drum before.

"They are brilliant.

"They will perform at Galoshans and it is going to be great.

"They will parade through the street.

"They are the only brass and drum band in Scotland - this is a first."

St Michael's teamed up with Streetband Project through the Inverclyde Youth Music Initiative.

Mat and his colleague Marcus Britton have been working on the scheme with Inverclyde schools for the last three years.

He said: "It's a great opportunity for pupils to have fun making music together."

Class teacher Danielle Kearns is also enjoying getting in on the act.

She added: "It is brilliant fun and the pupils love it."

Primary seven pupil Nadine Ali is finding herself with plenty of puff for the trombone.

She added: "I love playing it.

"I have played the violin before but this is totally different."

Classmate Micaylah Stevenson has found a passion for percussion and can't wait to play at the Halloween festival.

She added: "It's really good fun learning how to play the drums."
