A SPARKLING couple from Gourock took a road trip back in time to celebrate their diamond wedding.

Former soft drinks salesman Patrick Fulton and his wife Mary returned to Ayr to recreate the memories of their wedding day 60 years ago.

Their journey on September 5 1958 set them off en route to a happy marriage.

And the couple, who live in Gourock have been behind the wheel ever since.

Retired salesman and driver Patrick, 82, said: "We had such a lovely time in Ayr.

"The family asked what we wanted to do and I thought it would be great to go back.

"That is where we went with our best man my brother Hugh and bridesmaid, Mary's sister Margaret, on the day of our wedding."

The family went to Ayrshire for a weekend to toast the special milestone together.

The couple, who live in Binnie Street, first met when Mary worked in a fish shop in Charing Cross, Greenock, and Patrick was delivering for the bakers.

Patrick was smitten with Mary's smile and wooed her until he won her round.

They were married in St Andrew's Church in Larkfield and then enjoyed a celebration at the Co-op Halls in Roxburgh Street before heading for Ayr.

The couple soon settled down to married life, bringing up their three children Patrick, now 59, Ronnie, 56, and Tracey, 44, in Larkfield.

Mary, 82, said: "We have been very blessed with a wonderful family and we are very proud of them all.

"We have had a lovely life together.

"We have had our good time and bad times."

The couple are also devoted to their seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

On the day of their Diamond Wedding they celebrated with a special dinner at the Tontine, topped off with a visit from Provost Martin Brennan.
