A CHARITY football match is being held in memory of a little boy who tragically died in a road accident.

Robbie Quigg was only six when he was knocked down outside his home in Cumberland Road almost three years ago.

He was a popular member of St Andrew's Boys' Club and his football coach Graham Black has organised the annual event to raise funds for the Brightest Star Foundation which supports bereaved parents.

It is a charity close to her mum Michelle and dad Robert's hearts.

Michelle said: "My husband and I are so thankful to the club for all they have done since Robbie passed away.

"The charity match has become an annual event since Robbie died - the club have been amazing."

Graham added: "The club had already organised a charity match and when Robbie died we changed it to a benefit match.

"He is still very much missed in the club, so much so that we have redesigned our club badge to incorporate a star as a symbol in memory of Robbie."

He says Robbie's death affected him, the club and the wider community.

Graham said: "I was his coach and he was the same age as my son Dean, so as a parent it was even more poignant.

"The turnout for the games over the last two years shows the overwhelming support for Robbie's family.

"It also brings the community together."

The game will take place on Sunday September 23 at Ravenscraig Stadium and kick-off is 12.15pm.

A team of under 19s and under 17s will take on a side comprised of old coaches.

The younger teams from the 2009s to the 2012s will also get a chance to have a kickabout at half time.

Graham is appealing for local companies to support the event, to ensure that as much money as possible will go to the charity.

He is also looking for raffle prizes.
