STORM Ali is set to hit Inverclyde today with winds of up to 60mph and heavy rain.
An amber 'be prepared' weather warning has been issued for the district and individual gusts could reach 80mph.
The warning is in force until 5pm.
The Met Office says there is a potential danger to life in some areas due to flying debris.
Travel disruption to trains and ferries is 'highly likely' and coastal areas are bracing themselves for huge wave surges.
ScotRail said it is planning a normal service but urging passengers to check journeys before setting off.
People living near railway lines have been told to secure any loose garden furniture.
A Met Office spokesman said: "Large waves could affect coastal roads, sea fronts and properties."
