RENEWED calls to resurrect an axed bus service will be aired at a crunch meeting tonight.

Port Glasgow West Community Council are meeting with McGill's representatives Colin Napier and David Taylors to discuss if the Broadfield Circular can be re-introduced.

This will be the second meeting with bus chiefs and it is hoped they can be persuaded to bring back the service in even a reduced form.

Tommy Rodger, secretary of the community council, said: "We are asking for renewed discussions to bring back the Broadfield Circular service.

"Many people living the area of Northfield Avenue, Southfield Avenue and Castlehill Avenue are elderly and vulnerable.

"Now they are forced to walk to the Clune Brae, Arran Avenue, or Parkhill Avenue to get another bus.

"The majority of people who used this route were travel pass holders.

"McGill's said that they only received 58 per cent of a subsidy for a travel pass."

Mr Rodger described this as 'discriminatory' against the majority of people who need the service the most.

He said: "People are willing to accept some sort of compromise, such as a 'skipper' bus and the reduction in the frequency of the service."

The local activist says the service was a lifeline for many people in the community.

Mr Rodger said: "In inclement weather it is quite a walk uphill or downhill with shopping bags.

"As well as that there is the need to get a bus into the town centre to get a bus to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley or the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

"Even if people are going to Inverclyde Royal they need to get a bus from Port Glasgow into Greenock."

This evening's meeting will be held in Port Glasgow Town Hall at 7.30pm and all are welcome.
