A PORT butcher is celebrating another tasty slice of success for his square sausage.

Award-winning Drew McKenzie, of Robert Alexander, has been named best West Scotland Sliced Sausage Champion.

Drew was delighted to win using the same recipe his grandfather had 75 years ago.

He told the Telegraph: "This is the one to win.

"Slice is our biggest selling product.

"We pride ourselves on using good quality ingredients, the same ingredients my grandfather used 75 years ago.

"It's been a family recipe passed down through the years.

"We use good meat, rusk and seasoning and there is also a wee bit about the timing of the mix.

"If you go into some supermarkets everything is tied up with price, they try to cut corners and bulk it out.

"This shows that the old fashioned recipes are still the best."

Two other local butchers were also recognised in the Scottish Craft Butcher Awards.

McCaskie's of Wemyss Bay received a gold award for their beef slice sausage and beef hotlink and claimed silver for their chicken, jalapeno and cheese sausage, Andouille-style pork sausage and steak, spicy tomato and caramelised onion sausage.

Duncan Mackenzie of Greenock was awarded a silver for his salt chilli chicken sausages.

The results were announced at the Craft Butchers regional meeting.

The local butchers battled out out against the very best sausage makers from all over Scotland and were up against over 270 rival entries.
