IT was a happy homecoming for Moorfoot Primary as pupils produced a five-star performance to celebrate the official opening of their new-look school.

Staff and children returned to the Gourock building in June following a major £5 million overhaul.

The official opening took place yesterday and Provost Martin Brennan was on hand to do the honours, unveiling a commemorative plaque along with head teacher Alison Irvine.

The Moorfoot Drive building, which also includes a nursery and Garvel Deaf Centre, is the latest Inverclyde school to be renewed or completely refurbished as part of the council's £270m investment in the schools estate.

To mark the grand re-opening, pupils starred in their own musical, which was broadcast on a big screen, before singing and dancing in front of the audience of councillors, local authority officials, family and friends.

Provost Brennan said: "It’s a real privilege to mark the start of a new chapter of Moorfoot Primary, Moorfoot Nursery and Garvel Deaf Centre.

"With the passage of time, the building here became more than a bit tired and that much can be said of many schools here in Inverclyde.

"Something had to be done, there was no way children of Moorfoot or Inverclyde should have to settle for second best."

Head teacher, Mrs Irvine, says everyone has settled in extremely well having been decanted at the former Sacred Heart Primary for more than a year during the revamp.

She said: "Pupils and staff are delighted with the building, proud of it and feeling very happy to be back home."

During the celebrations, the children gave a rousing rendition of their song, 'Five-star school', and the P7 dance group performed a piece entitled ‘Come Alive’.

Moorfoot chaplain, Reverend Teri Peterson, of St John’s Church, then gave the school her blessing with a special prayer;.

Education convener, Jim Clocherty, said: "I hope the pupils and staff enjoy this new building and I’m sure the children will have fond memories of their time at Moorfoot."
