A COUPLE with hearts of gold marked a special anniversary by handing over £1,000 to charity.

Catherine and Ian Campbell enjoyed a double celebration at Gourock Golf Club to toast 50 years of marriage and Ian's 80th birthday.

The pair, who live in Gourock's St John's Road, asked for donations instead of presents and supported the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Reach For Autism, Ardgowan Hospice and Diabetes UK.

They were joined by family and friends and had a golden donation box.

Ian said: "It was a brilliant night."

Catherine said: "We thought what do we need at our age?

"We'd much rather give a donation to charity.

"We wanted to thank everyone for their kind donations.

"We were overwhelmed."

Ian and Catherine met at a church dance at the Mid Kirk and tied the knot at the The Old Kirk in Nelson Street, now Westburn Church, on August 31 in 1968 and held their reception at the former Queen's Hotel in Ashburn Gate.

They moved to their first home in Royal Street, then lived in Trumpethill for many years where they raised their family.

Before retiring Ian was a plumber and Catherine worked in the council's social work department for 17 years.

The couple were blessed with three children - Mhairi, 46, Ewan, 44, and Ross, 40 - and they dote on their three grandchildren.

After the party Mr and Mrs Campbell enjoyed a holiday cruise.
