INVERCLYDE’S SNP member of parliament has launched a scathing attack on the Scottish Government’s ‘appalling’ attempt at fixing Inverclyde’s crater-covered main road.

Stuart McMillan says that the government’s Transport Scotland agency and its contractors are treating local motorists with contempt over the condition of the A8.

The Telegraph recently highlighted complaints from motorists about the pothole-ridden stretch at Finlaystone.

Repair work was subsequently carried out but Mr McMillan is furious over what he believes is a half-hearted attempt to fix the dual carriageway.

He said: “Clearly a patch-up job has been done within the last few weeks but it is appalling.

“Some of the ruts and holes have been left and some of them have just been plied with material which is already deteriorating.

“It just isn’t good enough and Transport Scotland and Transerv Scotland are treating Inverclyde drivers with contempt.”

The MSP says he is particularly concerned with winter rapidly approaching.

Mr McMillan said: “This road is in need of urgent repair.

“It needs to be fixed before the winter sets in to make it safe for drivers.”

Roads bosses insist that they are planning work to improve the road

A spokesman for Transerv Scotland says the next step is to consult with all the relevant parties.

He said: “Planning of a number of resurfacing programmes adjacent to the A8 at Finlaystone Estate are currently underway.

“Scheduling of these projects will shortly begin with local authorities, emergency services and key stakeholders involved.

“In order to minimise disruption to motorists, works will need to operate around a number of projects already planned for the area, and outwith operational embargoes.

“We are proposing a start to these schemes within the weeks ahead.”

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “This is an operational matter for Scotland Transerv.”
