A FLEDGLING Greenock dance school has scooped an array of trophies in its first ever competition — including two Scottish championships.

Youngsters from Lucy's Dance Academy — which began barely eight months ago — stormed to a haul of golden awards at the prestigious event.

Lucy Robertson, who runs her school out of Greenock's Elim Church, is delighted with the stunning success.

She said: "I am extremely proud of all the girls.

"They have progressed very fast due to their hard work and determination.

"I cannot wait to see what their bright futures hold for them."

Lucy's team of starlets were taking part in the World Lyrical Dance Federation's Scottish Championships in Ayrshire.

Every one of the 11-strong squad came away with a shiny trophy to match their polished performances.

Pupil Sarah James came out top in the under 14s section to be crowned champion, and she also scored the highest number of points of any dancer on the day.

Another of Lucy's Academy girls, Lily-Grace O'Donoghue, won the under six category, while pal Sophia Deak, who is only four, was runner-up.

Other notable place finishers were Grace Johnstone and Amylia Cameron, who were second in the under 12s and under eights competitions respectively.

Lucy's other trophy winners on the day were Mollie O'Donoghue, Katelyn Peebles, Lily Stewart, Kaitlyn Hurrell, Chelsea Learie and Cerys Reeve.

Lyrical Dance includes aspects of ballet combined with modern artistic interpretation of music, and in the team dance competition the girls finished fourth out of a field of 30.

Lucy, 30, had been teaching dance locally for 12 years before striking out on her own.

She said: "I attended the Dance School of Scotland and Scottish Ballet and gained by teaching qualifications at Anniesland College.

"I started teaching some of the kids from the ages of two and three and they have come with me to the new school.

"It's been going really well so far, and the success we've had in competition is testament to the commitment and hard work of the girls."
